What it is
Tōrua is an immersive contemporary dance work that transforms the city into a living stage, guiding audiences through streets, laneways and public spaces while they wear wireless headsets offering a choice between two original musical scores by Eden Mulholland (Ngāti Porou) and Anna Edgington. Directed by Malia Johnston and created with nine dance artists from across Aotearoa, the work is uniquely re-created for every location it inhabits.
For this return season, Tōrua unfolds in the city centre spaces surrounding the new Karanga-a-Hape and Te Waihorotiu train stations — a chance to experience these evolving urban places from a fresh perspective. As audiences move alongside the performers, they become part of the choreography itself, discovering familiar and newly connected spaces in unexpected ways.
Presented as part of Tempo Dance Festival 2026, the show suits families comfortable with a walking performance outdoors. Accessible route options are available, and walking shoes are recommended. Free tickets are required as spaces are limited.
