The Civic, Auckland
What it is
The Civic — Te Civic — sits at the corner of Queen Street and Wellesley Street, one of Auckland's largest and most storied live performance theatres with 2,378 seats. The programme spans musicals, circus and magic, opera, comedy, dance, and classical music, so there is usually something on the calendar worth building a family outing around.
The foyers open an hour before curtain, giving families time to settle in without a rush. Stark's Café and Bar serves Caffe L'Affare coffee, show-themed cocktails, and cabinet food including baguettes and croissants — a useful stop before a matinee. The venue is fully cashless at its bars and box office.
Accessibility is well considered, with mobility parking, lift access, and a dedicated accessibility virtual tour available online. Families wanting to get a feel for the space before attending a show can also take a standard virtual tour of the building.

Kia Ora. Thanks do much for pleasant and enjoyable to cenimy seeing „A Christmas Carol” on the stage. I was enchanted with acting quality, plot Construction with so much humor in it and special effects in a wonderful atmosphere that makes me count the days down on the way to Christmas. PS. Thanks for letting me takę so many pictures after the show in this historical theatre. I’ve covered at about 17 000 km to be there. Much appreciated and see You there one day in the future! :)

I’ve just completed the 10AM Civic Tour led by James and warmly ushered by Katie. What an absolutely glorious experience. I say ‘performance’ by James because the tour itself unfolded like a beautifully crafted show. I loved every minute — the rich historical details, the humour, the storytelling. I would highly recommend this as a must-do cultural attraction for anyone wanting to experience Auckland’s arts and heritage at its finest.
What a great and beautiful theatre the Civic is. It has so many spaces, and walking inside feels like being in a movie. It was also used by Peter Jackson to film King Kong, and today it hosts international shows. The place is very well kept, with respect for the time when it was built. The hall with its starry sky. The bronze. Everything always shining. Very recommended to visit.
What a stunning feast for the eyes! We attended an event here recently and what a spectacular place both in and out. Hard for disabled folk, with many stairs but it was an enjoyable experience. When I was seated, I looked up and it felt like I was outside amongst the stars. I hope to come back again
