What it is
Primary school children from across Auckland gather at the Auckland Town Hall for Te Kahu Tōpuni Kapa Haka Festival, a non-competitive celebration where young performers take the stage with waiata, haka, poi and mōteatea rooted in the stories of Tāmaki Makaurau.
The festival sits within the broader Poumatua Festival, a three-day celebration of the birth of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. It gives kura the chance to strengthen relationships with tangata whenua by learning narratives tied to this land, commemorating the beginnings of the city.
Supported by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and presented in partnership with Auckland Live, the day centres on young people building connections to each other and to the place they call home — with kapa haka as the thread that holds it together.
