What it is
Objectspace in Ponsonby is Aotearoa New Zealand's leading gallery dedicated to design, craft and architecture. Its programme moves between solo shows, group exhibitions and public talks, with a strong commitment to supporting makers and expanding knowledge of material cultures — from contemporary jewellery and ceramics to furniture and Māori design practice.
Alongside the galleries, a well-chosen shop carries specialist publications on craft, design and architecture, as well as limited-edition objects and exhibition merchandise, making it worth a browse in its own right.
The gallery runs a lively events calendar — panel discussions, workshops, and the annual Ockham Lectures — that draws on both local practitioners and international guests. Families with older children who are curious about how things are made and designed will find plenty to look at and talk about across a visit.
What other parents say
I was over the moon to discover that Objectspace is the one and only public gallery in Auckland dedicated to art, fashion, and design. It was such a pleasure to attend one of their events last night — a beautiful evening filled with fun, effortlessly stylish people and a warm, easygoing atmosphere. Already looking forward to the next one!
Great gallery, care and attention to detail. Wonderful staff.

Much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, absolutely worth a visit
This place is great. They focus on design, architecture and craft rather than fine art. Not a large gallery, but really interesting. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Well worth a visit.
Every showing i’ve visited here has been an immersive experience which i’ve gained an education from. Design of the space is always well thought out, and each exhibition has been interesting for me. I first visited for the work of David Straight, whose work began for me what is now a very major interest in John Scott and New Zealand Architecture. The gallery has a great selection of books and journals available, and the staff are friendly too. Visit!
