Megazone Laser Tag

Megazone runs laser tag the straightforward way: suit up, take a blaster, and spend twelve minutes chasing and dodging through a dark, multi-level maze of bases and targets. There are more than fifty game modes, so a second round rarely plays like the first, and a single game starts at $15 a head.

What it is

Two Auckland arenas carry the name. Grey Lynn — trading as Megazone Ponsonby — is laser tag first and last, with a bar on site for the adults waiting it out. Silverdale, up on the Hibiscus Coast, is the roomier of the two: alongside the arena it runs a 737 flight simulator, VR, a Floor is Lava game and an arcade, which makes it the easier one to stretch into a half-day.

Both arenas do birthday packages, and Silverdale runs $20-a-head evening sessions from Thursday to Sunday, which suits older kids and teens after a later game. Check hours before you drive — Grey Lynn and Silverdale both close Monday and Tuesday outside the school holidays.
