What it is
Auckland Climbing Gym brings indoor bouldering to the heart of Auckland City, giving families a place to clamber, problem-solve, and build confidence on the wall whatever the weather outside.
Children from five years old are catered for alongside adults, and the gym offers casual entry as well as multi-entry passes and weekly memberships — handy for families who plan to make a habit of it. Members gain access to a community route-setting programme, where climbers can contribute to the design and grading of new routes, which gives regular visitors a genuine stake in how the gym evolves.
Underground parking is available on site, removing one of the usual friction points of a city-centre outing. A safety waiver is required before climbing, so it is worth sorting that in advance of the first visit.
What other parents say
We wanted to check this gym out as we are moving to be nearby and it would be very convenient. I wanted to like the gym but I was pretty disappointed. We were told on arriving that the gym has more of an outdoor style to it and so might feel harder and be more crimpy than other bouldering gyms. Fair enough to have their own style (and I like crimps) but the climbs just felt quite awkward rather than relying on technique. But my main issue was that the holds were filthy and the route signs were falling off, it was quite hard to tell which climb was which. A lot of the footholds were so polished that it felt quite dangerous doing some of the climbs and weirdly some of the easiest graded routes didn't have any footholds until over 1m up the wall, this could have been a route setting decision but it felt a bit odd and it more seemed like some holds were missing especially as checking on Toplogger it said that some of the routes were set 6-12 months ago. The website says the whole gym is reset every 12 weeks, which just appears to be a lie. There also seemed to be some pretty large inconsistencies between routes of the same grade, which contributed to the feeling that the climbs were old and maybe missing holds? The whole gym has a weird vibe and feels pretty dirty, tired and dated, which is mad considering it is only 2 years old. My overall feeling is that it's been neglected and needs a serious refresh. I've climbed in over 15 climbing gyms across NZ, 8 of which are bouldering only and this is probably the one I have enjoyed the least. If you are keen on bouldering, go to Northern Rocks or Boulder Co. instead, they are a lot more fun and worth the extra travel time.
Great climbing gym. The owners and staff are passionate about climbing and providing a fun experience and are always friendly and helpful. The gym uses its space very effectively and is able to house 100+ routes at any given time on terrain ranging from slab to overhang. There’s something available for any skill level from beginner all the way up to some challenging V7+ climbs. If you’re in or around Auckland city definitely check out this gym.

Excellent climbing gym with great staff, fun routes, and a welcoming atmosphere. Clean, well-maintained, and suitable for all skill levels. Highly recommend!
This was my very first time doing bouldering ever. I chose this place just because its convenient location(at CBD, close to my home and university). I came on a rainy Saturday morning so it was not as crowded as I expected. The staff was really friendly and excited to give the induction and what the bouldering was about. Compared to the Boulder Co, the space is smaller. However, I feel that they gave me a decent bouldering experience. I managed to do all V0-V2s and my body was sore the next day! I’ll definitely come back!
Not bad gym. Entry is a bit strange but staff were friendly. Very much an underground old school vibe. Not hugely beginner friendly as most of the routes were intermediate onward. My biggest issue was how worn the holds are. I suspect some/most are recycled and have had a previous life in another gym. General vibe was a bit lacking. Lighting seemed a bit dark and music was near non existent. The strength training area consisted of 3 kettle bells which was a bit disappointing. For the money it's a bit expensive but I suppose you are paying for the central location.
