What it is

Northern Rocks is a bouldering gym in Glenfield that has built a loyal following on the North Shore by making climbing feel accessible rather than intimidating. The walls offer routes for all ability levels, and the space includes a dedicated fitness area and yoga facilities alongside the bouldering.

Families are well catered for. Youth after-school classes, school holiday programmes, home school sessions, and birthday and occasions packages mean children can make the place their own. Bouldering Fundamentals classes give first-timers a proper grounding, and personalised coaching is available for those who want to push further.

The gym's community atmosphere is a genuine draw — the kind of place where regulars exchange fist bumps and new climbers find their feet without feeling out of their depth. A pro shop stocks shoes, chalk, and gear for families ready to commit to the sport.

Absolutely love Northern Rocks Indoor Climbing! From the moment you walk in, the energy is welcoming and motivating. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and always happy to help whether you're a complete beginner or experienced climber. The facility is clean, well laid out, and offers a fantastic variety of walls and routes that keep things exciting every visit. What really stands out is how supportive the environment feels. It’s a great place to challenge yourself, build confidence, and get a solid workout without it feeling like a chore. The routes are changed regularly, so there’s always something new to try. Whether you’re going solo, with friends, or bringing the family, it’s an awesome experience every time. Highly recommend to anyone looking for fun, fitness, and a positive vibe all in one place.

Have been coming here consistently and it is certainly worth the money whether you purchase day passes or are an official member. While their facility is smaller in comparison to Boulder Co., their staff are very friendly and eager to help, their walls are regularly updated for new and unique routes, and unlike Boulder Co (mostly just slabs), they actually have a wide range of different types of climbing. Very good stuff.

Really good atmosphere with some nice routes. Came here on a whim during an Auckland visit and was not disappointed by the quality of the setting or the venue. Had great interactions with both the staff. Decently priced with a very generous first time offer giving you free access for the following week. Dog friendly which is a huge plus. Would recommend coming if you want to try out bouldering

I’m not quite sure about this place. With so few bouldering gyms in Auckland, you really want to support each one, but I’ve had more experiences here that left me feeling off than welcome. I joined the women’s bouldering workshop, and the women running it, along with the other participants, were all lovely! That said, I’d recommend it more for the social side than for engaged learning. It’s very casual, and the gym is too noisy and busy to really focus. The general staff vibe wasn’t great. The first staff member I encountered seemed disinterested and didn’t clearly explain where I needed to go, even after I mentioned it was my first time. Another time, I tried to buy chalk during their 20% off winter sale and was told the discount was for members only, even though their Instagram team later confirmed it was meant to be for everyone. The gym isn’t very clean and a bit smelly, so I usually leave feeling a bit gross. Another thing (which I hate to be a Karen about because I do love animals) is that people sometimes have their dogs with them, running around the gym. While they are cute, it adds to the hygiene concerns. What if someone is allergic, and personally I don’t want to be touching dog hair or smelling dog while I’m trying to climb. If I do keep going, it will be purely out of convenience, but for the price, I’m not convinced it’s worth it.

Got recommended to come by a friend and man was it amazing. At first I was very apprehensive with the whole bouldering thing and the "hygiene" of it, but the routes are well planned out and the staff are extremely friendly and understanding. They have a large variety of rental gear and offered some of the most reasonable prices I have seen. I've enjoyed my time so much there I come at least twice a week and joined a club! Highly recommend coming to at least take a look.
