Train Rides in Auckland

A train ride is close to a guaranteed win with small children, and Auckland has more of them than most people realise — volunteer-run miniature railways, a restored vintage line, and larger attractions that run a train around the grounds as part of the visit.

The volunteer-run ones are the best value on this whole site: a few dollars a ride, run by people who built the track themselves. The catch is that they mostly open on set weekends rather than daily, and the season thins over winter, so check the day before you drive out. Rides are usually short, which suits the attention span they are aimed at.
