What it is
Founded in 1970 by volunteers who hacked back gorse with machetes and fundraised to rescue locomotives and carriages from around the country, Glenbrook Vintage Railway runs heritage steam trains on the old Waiuku Branch Railway between Glenbrook and Waiuku. The fully working railway is a direct result of that founding generation's labour, and that story is woven into every visit.
The core experience is a steam train ride, with a First Class option for families wanting a more premium carriage. Beyond regular running days, the railway stages special events — including a popular Day Out with Thomas and a Christmas Lights evening service — that give families a reason to return across different seasons.
It suits children who light up around big, old machines, as well as parents who appreciate that everything here has been preserved by hand. The railway is run as a registered charity, staffed largely by volunteers who still restore and maintain the fleet on site.
What other parents say
Glenbrook Vintage Railway for the Christmas train ride and had a great time. Plenty of food trucks and stalls, beautiful Christmas lights, and a really fun evening overall. Lots of parking, with volunteers helping manage it smoothly. A great place to spend an evening with family and kids and it was a great drive too. Away from city.
Such a special place to visit with kids. We went to the christmas event for the first time this year and it was very magical. The lights were amazing! One thing I would offer as friendly feedback, is the wait times were incredibly long for little people - over an hour for majority of the train rides from 7pm. I wondered if there was a way that for the christmas event, people could purchase a ticket for a specific time, then they would get a coloured ticket that corresponded to that time, and then they would board the train at their chosen time, saving extremely long cues (for example - 6pm train is a purple ticket, the 6.30 train is a red ticket). It may be something you have tonight about before, and be tricky logistically but if not, I think the event would run much smoother and slow people to arrive, do the other activites and just line up when their train is ready. Thanks to all the volunteers who make the event so special. You are all amazing!!

A Magical Coastal Escape and Christmas Wonder If you are looking to escape the city bustle without driving for hours, Glenbrook is an absolute treasure. My recent visit here left me feeling completely refreshed, and the photos truly don’t do justice to the peacefulness of this coastal pocket. The first thing that strikes you is the unspoiled natural beauty. As seen in the images, the coastline offers vast, open views where the sky meets the shimmering water. It’s the kind of place where time seems to slow down, offering a sense of tranquility that is simply unmatched. The highlight of this trip, however, was experiencing the seasonal magic of the Christmas lights. Seeing the area transformed by festive displays against the backdrop of the quiet harbour was spectacular. The lights add a whimsical charm to the rugged landscape, making the evening feel truly special. It is a fantastic way to celebrate the season with family, combining the raw beauty of New Zealand’s coast with a warm, festive community spirit. For those who enjoy photography, the contrast of the glowing decorations against the darkening horizon is stunning. It’s a very family-friendly spot; the atmosphere is safe and welcoming, maintaining a "local secret" vibe that is hard to find these days. The community feels quiet, and the area is immaculately kept. Glenbrook is a 5-star destination for anyone who appreciates natural scenery and a festive soul-recharge. Whether for the views or the holiday magic, it is highly recommended!
Celebrating our wedding at Glenbrook Vintage Railway was a truly unforgettable experience that we will cherish forever. The historic steam locomotive was a breathtaking centrepiece to our ceremony in the nostalgic ambience of the Glenbrook Station, and the staff's passion and expertise helped us to bring our dreamy romantic vision to life. We are eternally grateful to everyone involved in making our day exceptionally special. Our guests certainly expressed how much they loved the whole experience! Photos by Sara Coppell.
My partner and I went on the Xmas light train. Absolutely loved it. Will definitely be returning again and have already planned next trip up during Easter to ride the steam trains. A lovely place for anyone to go.
