What it is

Auckland CBD's Ellen Melville Centre hosts a free screening of The Boy and the Heron as part of its Japanese Film Night series, which brings Japanese cinema to the local community and opens a window into Japanese culture through film.

The feature is Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's 2024 Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature. The story follows Mahito, a boy who enters a mysterious world guided by a talking heron after the loss of his mother — weaving together grief, courage, friendship and hope through Ghibli's distinctive hand-crafted animation.

The film screens in Japanese with English subtitles, making it a gentle introduction to the language as well as the art form. No booking is required.
