What it is
Auckland Explorer Bus puts families on the top deck of an open-top double-decker, looping past the city's best-known stops with English commentary weaving in the history and culture of Tāmaki Makaurau. Buses run every 35 minutes, so there is no pressure to rush — hop off at Wētā Workshop Unleashed, SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's, Auckland Zoo, Auckland Museum, or the All Blacks Experience, then catch the next bus when everyone is ready.
Tickets come as 24-hour or 48-hour passes, with family passes available and the option to bundle in attraction entry. The route also stops close to the cruise ship terminals, making it a practical choice for families arriving by ship.
It is a solid base for a first day in the city, or for locals who want to cover ground without the logistics of driving between scattered attractions.
What other parents say
The busses got out of sync - which is understandable given traffic, but it led to a lot of waiting around for late busses or missing early busses. The commentary was prerecorded and had more "keep your hands inside the bus" than informative commentary, but what informative commentary there was felt good. They skipped a stop I was interested in, but it led me to stop at Bastion Point, which was the highlight of my Auckland experience! Just to add - the staff member at stop 2 was great and really influenced my day. He was fantastic!
The bus ride was good in that we saw much of the Aukland city area. Double decker bus was fun. We sat at the front, on top. Plenty of stops and opps to get off then back on. There's a bus every 30 minutes. The bus ride, if you don't get off, is 2 hours. There's no windscreen wiper on top so that was disappointing because it was intermittently sunny and rainy during the tour. During the rainy bits the top deck got flooded and the water sloshed around quite a bit. Our front row seat had about 3cm of water on the floor at one point. There was a drain hole beside my left foot, so that was good. My biggest complaint is about the sound system. The recorded commentary was loud, muffled, and difficult to understand. Decent value for money on this no frills tourist ride.

In principle this should have been good as it was taking us to most of the key spots and the advertised frequency was 30 minutes between buses. The reality was not what we expected. We hopped off at Parnell to check it out. We went back to the busstop and had to wait over 45 minutes for the next bus. As we had joined the bus initially in the mid afternoon this meant that we didn't have enough time to do another hop off as the last bus started at 4pm. So we just stayed on the bus and didn't visit anywhere else. The next morning we joined the first bus so we could do the blue loop to the outer areas. We got off at Mt Eden and climbed to the top. When we came back we had a fairly short wait and continued thef blue loop endingb up back at the Museum where it became a red loop bus. However, the bus had a mechanical problerm and the driver said a mechanic was on his way. Given that we had to be back at our hotel by midday for our airport shuttle we walked to Parnell and caught public transport back to thef hotel. We feel the experience was not worth $70. Note that the staff member who sold us our ticket at Stop 2 was great. He even recognised us when we went back to use the second half of our 24 hour ticket.
Great 2 hour trip seeing all the highlights of Auckland. Get off and back on when ever you want. Can choose either a 1 or 2 day ticket. Modern bus with great staff. Best way to see Auckland within a limited time.
Great day with the easy to use hop on hop off system. We have used this in other countries around the world and have thoroughly enjoyed it in Auckland too. Totally recommend for an easy and safe way to see the city.
