What it is

The Auckland Philharmonia's Community Classics series heads to the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna for an afternoon built around the music of cinema. The orchestra works through extracts from memorable soundtracks — The Piano, The King's Speech and Lord of the Rings — before the concert reaches a centrepiece: the premiere of a special orchestral arrangement of the Samoan Hymn Medley from the film TINĀ, composed by Igelese Ete and arranged by Thomas Goss, performed with Auckland Gospel Choir and guitarist Posenai Mavaega, who featured in the original soundtrack.

Two emerging pianists take the spotlight: Haydn Staples Piano Scholar Dylan Tang performs a solo from The Piano, and rising star David Li plays an excerpt from Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. New Zealand actor Kevin Keys guides the audience through the programme. A pre-concert performance from North Shore Youth Music takes place in the venue foyer beforehand.
