Torpedo Bay Navy Museum

The official museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy, Torpedo Bay Navy Museum in Devonport traces the service from its earliest days through to the present. Collections range across ships, medals, weapons technology — including torpedoes and radar — naval customs, and aviation, with oral histories recorded from veterans of WWI through to more recent operations in East Timor and Afghanistan lending the place a genuinely human voice.

What it is

Younger visitors can get hands-on through school holiday activities and workshops, while older children tend to make a beeline for the stories of individual ships: HMNZS Gambia, said to have fired the last shots of WWII, and the WWI hospital ship HMHS Maheno carry real narrative weight.

The museum is open seven days and free for New Zealand residents, with a café on site for the inevitable refuelling stop.

Torpedo Bay Navy Museum located at Devonport. It is nearby the ferry terminal with 15 minutes walk distance. It is suggested to wear water and wind resistant clothing because it is windy when walking along the coast. The navy museum is free admission for Auckland residents but not always applicable for international visitors. Although the area is not big, the exhibition items are great enough

A wonderful place to visit in Devonport, especially with kids! There is so much to learn, and the museum is very well presented. My children really enjoyed seeing all the mini versions of navy transport boats and other displays. You need to spend some quality time here if you want to take in all the information, as it is quite an informative place indeed. They also have nice and affordable souvenirs available to buy, which is a lovely bonus. Highly recommend visiting if you are in Devonport! Free entry for NZ residents.

Thank you for providing this facility free of entrance fee, especially for families. It is such an educative place for children who are interested in New Zealand's history. The collections are mainly miniature and pictures, but some original artifacts are also on display. They are all interesting pieces of history for us to learn from. Hope to be back again.

3rd generation navy. Always enjoy the museum and cafe. I sailed the whalers and clinker dinghies now on display in uk and nz. Pretty cool to be part of history 😎 👌 Hey usually good parking or park off tge waterfront and enjoy the waterfront walk.

Excellent museum with great displays, clean and well organized. The cafe on site has a nice variety of food at more reasonable prices than the restaurants at the ferry landing. Cute little gift shop too.
