What it is
Based at Ardmore Airport south of Auckland, the New Zealand Warbirds Association keeps a collection of historic military and vintage aircraft not just preserved but flying. Visitors can wander the hangars with knowledgeable guides who can talk through any aircraft in the collection, and the scale model display adds another layer for those who like to linger.
Regular Tarmac Days and open events bring the flight line to life, and on a good weekend there is a real chance of seeing one of the aircraft in the air. For families wanting more than a look, adventure flights are available in a range of types — from the T-6 Harvard to the Tiger Moth and Boeing Stearman. There is also a café with views across the apron.
The association runs annual airshows as well as group tours, making it equally well suited to a casual family visit or a more organised school or club outing. Museum guides draw consistent praise for their friendliness and depth of knowledge.
What other parents say
It was an absolutely wonderful place to visit. Jason provided us with a tour, and his knowledge was truly exceptional; we learned a great deal. We are certainly looking forward to returning to witness these planes take flight.
A great little aircraft museum with flying aircraft ranging from the early 1900s to the 1970s. A very helpful and passionate team of volunteers keep the place working and offer excellent insight into the different aircraft. You will rarely be able to get as close to the exhibits as this place! There store has a good range of merch and this helps fund their activities. Please remember that most of the aircraft on display regularly fly, so please don't touch or bump into the exhibits.

Awesome experience for family with 2 teenage boys, on a blustering winters day in Auckland. The displays are stunning if you're interested in anything aeronautical. Awesome history displays and super passionate volunteers add to a great morning.
Awesome! Had a great flight in a Yellow Harvard. Pilot did some aerobatics and a flight south and up around the East coast. One of the best experiences.
Phenomenal place. The team at warbirds are fantastically dedicated and knowledgeable. It is a great place to learn the aviation history of WW1 & WW2. Amazing aircraft, pilots and ground crew.
