What it is

Tucked into the Viaduct Basin at Karanga Plaza, this open-water harbour pool sits within a ring of pontoons that keep swimmers safely separated from boat traffic in the viaduct channel. The 33-metre lanes come with lane ropes and ladders, and a jumping platform with balustrades and a grab rail gives older kids and adults a proper reason to keep coming back.

Access is via the tidal steps and a marina gangway, which steepens considerably at low tide — worth knowing before arriving with anyone who finds steep gradients difficult. A pair of changing booths sits on the plaza, and accessible public toilets are 30 metres away. Lifeguards are present during the summer peak season.

Free to use and open every day from dawn to dusk, it draws lap swimmers, casual splashers, and anyone who has ever wanted to swim with a harbour view rather than a painted lane line beneath them.

It's nice 😍 awesome view of the city. Walked past here on our Kiwi art trail hunt. If I knew this existed, I would have checked safe swim, brought our togs, and had a swim. Looks good.

Pool has tidal stairs for "safe" water play amongst small children, a jumping deck and walking pathway to three swim lanes, and two changing rooms near the swim area. Life guards are on duty outside public holidays.

Brownies pool what a spot. All tide swimming in the heart of the city. Doing bombs and lying on the hot concrete. A place of the people

Karanga Plaza Harbour Pool, located in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter, is a fantastic free public swimming spot with stunning waterfront views. Opened in December 2024, it features four 33-meter swim lanes, a casual swim area, and a jumping platform, all within a safe, enclosed space. The pool is well-maintained, with lifeguards on duty during peak hours and regular water quality checks. Changing facilities and cold showers add to the convenience. While occasional closures due to water quality concerns occur, it remains a great place to cool off and enjoy the harbor atmosphere.
