About
Matariki marks the rising of a special star cluster in the winter sky each June or July, signalling the start of the Māori New Year — and MOTAT brings the celebration to life in style. Head to Te Puawānanga, the science and technology centre, to make a digital wish for the New Year to Hiwa-i-te-rangi, the star of wishes and aspirations, and admire the stunning artwork of Huriana Kopeke-Te Aho.
Get creative by designing your very own whetū (star) to take home and decorate your whare with, all while learning about the fascinating science behind Matariki — a true star cluster whose hundreds of stars are physically close to one another in space.
