Weekend Market

Auckland Night Markets

The Auckland Night Markets have been running since 2011, and the format barely changes from suburb to suburb: a shopping-centre car park, a few dozen stalls, and food from most of the cuisines the city cooks. Families tend to arrive early in the evening, when it is easier to move a pushchair between the tables and children can be talked through what is on offer before the queues build. Prices are pitched at street-food level, so it works as a cheap dinner out rather than a sit-down meal, and there is usually something plain enough for a fussy eater alongside the chilli. Because the market moves — a different centre each night, Monday through Sunday — it is worth checking which one is on before setting out. Most sites are under cover, which makes it one of the few evening outings that survives a wet night.
