What it is
The Red Boats runs public fishing trips on Auckland's Waitematā Harbour aboard MV Ocean Spirit, a purpose-built 45ft launch with large covered fishing areas and onboard toilets. Skippers bring more than a decade of charter fishing experience, backed by the latest electronic fish-finding equipment — which goes some way to explaining the outfit's solid catch record.
Individual trips are open to anyone from solo anglers to groups of up to eight, joining a boat that carries a maximum of 18 passengers on public sailings. Rods are available to hire if pre-booked, and anglers should bring their own bait and food; alcohol is BYO. Both full-day and evening options run across the season.
It suits families with older children who are ready to try their hand at sea fishing — the covered deck keeps everyone comfortable, and heading home with a bin of fresh fish makes for a satisfying end to the day.
What other parents say
Really cool cruise on the red boats! The crew were amazing—very friendly and helpful—and the pricing was quite affordable. We had a lovely family day out and truly enjoyed the experience. The boats look a bit old, but that’s totally fine considering the price and the stunning views. Thanks to the Red Boats team for making our day so memorable! 😊
What a beautiful Auckland sunset cruise my partner and I had. It was great seeing the landmarks around the harbour and learning about it's rich history. An insightful and knowledgeable tour guide as well as cruising under the Auckland Harbour Bridge - twice! :-) would definitely recommend this cruise and at such a great price too!

The Hogwash gave us a great ride she was smooth and very peaceful. Our sailor was very knowledgeable on the land marks we passed and shared some great stories dating back to the 1900’s. Me and my partner really enjoyed it!
I don't know the secret to happiness, but I have never felt sad while eating cheese, or being in/on/near the water. We had a lovely cruise around the Auckland Harbour seeing places like the Sky Tower, the Harbour Bridge, Devonport Naval Base, The Cloud, the Viaduct Harbour and Rangitoto Island. In the end we saw huge stingrays feeding. We each had an individual cheese and snack pack, and a choice of either wine or a beer. I absolutely LOVE the idea of individual packs. This means you don't have to keep getting up to dish and one person gets all while another gets nothing. It's quite a generous portion! I was also impressed that they had about 5 or 6 beer choices. (Not sure about the wine, because no thanks). Thank You Red Boats for a great afternoon. I just feel that the cheese and wine cruise should be child free, because the kids running all over the place, yelling, up the stairs, down the stairs, was very distracting and irritating.
Great commentary. Bar manager was fab. We ordered the wine and cheese platter. More than we could eat. Highly recommend. Value for monrey
