Muriwai Beach Horse Treks

Muriwai Beach Horse Treks leads riders out across the black sand of Muriwai Beach and into the neighbouring Woodhill forest, with routes designed for a range of experience levels. Beginners ride on a lead rein or take the reins themselves on walking-only trails, while more confident riders can head out on the intermediate trek and waterfall ride.

What it is

The operation keeps a large, named team of horses — Gypsy, Panda, Scooter, Frankie and others — and guides fit riders with helmets and vests before heading out. Team building sessions, school holiday programmes, and special events such as birthdays are also on offer, so there are reasons to return beyond a single family outing.

For families where children have never sat on a horse before, the beginner options make a first ride genuinely accessible, and the beach-and-forest setting does most of the work from there.

Highly recommend, this company went above and beyond to make a dream come true of riding on the beach with my daughter. Opo and Dark were absolutely brilliant, our guide Sienna was incredible and we felt safe the entire time. The horses are very well maintained and the guides put them first at all times which is always wonderful to see. All in all highly recommend! 🥰 thank you so much team! We are beyond grateful and cannot wait to come back and do it all again!

A great quiet ride. The horses were so well looked after which is the first thing i look at having horses of my own. Majority were in bitless bridles which is so great to see considering they spend their days with beginners on the reins. The staff were so lovely and knew their horses like the back of their hands, to the point where they knew exactly where they were going to stop and pee 😂 Well done on running such a lovely ride for both animal and rider ❤️

I have been on many horse treks and this is definitely among the very best. Great horses & stunning location. Good guides with excellent safety standards. Great variety on the ride including various terrain, speeds and activity.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience from start to finish, I was sad when it ended- it went by too quickly! Highly recommended if you’re a tourist or an Aucklander! The horses are great, it was first time I have ever ridden a Clydesdale so that was a treat! The guides Tancy and Sienna were brilliant - they should get a bonus/raise! Their knowledge and expertise were superb Thank you for such a wonderful time! Hope to do another ride soon!! 💗🫶🙌🐴🦄🐎
