Light up the Māori New Year with a magical moonlit walk along the Māngere foreshore.
The Matariki Moonlight Lantern Walk at Ambury Farm is back — and it's one of the most special free community events of the season. Hosted by Friends of the Farm, this free family evening brings the local community together to craft tin-can lanterns, share kai, and walk together through the farm paddocks and foreshore as the stars of Matariki rise.
The evening kicks off at 5:30pm in the farm barn where you'll hammer out your own custom tin-can lantern design, before the whole group sets off together at 6:30pm for a scenic hīkoi along the foreshore by lantern light. Afterwards, warm up with hot chocolate and home baking. A sausage sizzle, hash browns, and onions are also on offer — all free.
What to bring: one empty tin can per person filled with frozen water (spares available if needed), warm winter clothing, and all-terrain wheels if you have little ones — farm tracks are bumpy and muddy, suitable for mountain buggies but not standard strollers.
Please arrive on time so the community can set off together.
