Matakana

What it is

Tucked just outside Matakana, the Sculptureum winds visitors along a 1.4km trail through gardens and indoor galleries, with more than 800 artworks to discover across the route. The whole visit takes around two to three hours, and there is genuine room to set the pace — linger in a gallery, let the kids clamber around open outdoor spaces, or spot the animals dotted through the grounds.

It is designed to be anything but a hushed white-cube experience. Children are free to move, explore, and make some noise, while the adults get colour and surprise in equal measure. Interactive and playful spaces sit alongside more considered indoor galleries, and the on-site Rothko Restaurant means the day does not have to end when the trail does.

The Sculptureum pairs naturally with a Matakana markets morning, making it a solid anchor for a full day out of Auckland with kids in tow.

Very interesting sculptures well curated in a beautiful setting. Ticket office (next to the restaurant)-outdoor garden(across from the restaurant)-indoor galleries(past ticket office)-palm garden & pink snail garden-souvenir shop. Had a great fun for almost 2 hours. Enjoyed indoor galleries most. Well worth a visit.

At first, I was a little worried that it might be boring, but once we went inside, both my children and I really enjoyed it. We especially liked the activity sheet, as it helped the children become more engaged with the artworks, while I was also able to quietly enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

This place is awesome. The gardens and sculptures are incredible and there is such a diverse range. I especially loved the animals. It's easy to tell how loved and looked after they are (something very important to me) and they are just gorgeous. Was extra lucky to get to meet the Tortoises while I was there. Highly recommend 😊

This is an absolutely wonderful roughly two hour experience with a private garden and art museum. The eye for architecture and love put into curating this experience made for a wonderful visit and one we highly recommend. The wild flowers, palms, stones, and sculptures were favorites. Thank you to all who put so much work creating and sustaining the Sculptureum. Save time to eat at the highly acclaimed restaurant and make the most of your holiday!

I have never experienced so much fun and excitement in a sculpture garden before. In fact, this place offers not just one, but three unique sculpture gardens, each designed around a different theme. Every section feels fresh and inspiring, making the visit truly unforgettable. In addition to the outdoor displays, there are several indoor galleries filled with vibrant, colorful, and creative artworks that capture your attention at every turn. This is a world-class art collection unlike anything else, located just a little over an hour north of Auckland. The combination of stunning outdoor landscapes and thoughtfully curated indoor exhibitions creates a perfect balance between nature and art. It is a destination that appeals to art lovers, families, and anyone looking for a unique cultural experience. To make the visit even more special, the on-site restaurant, Rothko, is absolutely outstanding. The food, atmosphere, and service add an extra layer of enjoyment to the overall experience. Dining there after exploring the galleries is the perfect way to relax and complete a memorable day. Overall, this place is a must-visit destination that offers creativity, beauty, and excellent hospitality all in one location.
