Telling Your Story, Comic Creation Workshop: Toby Morris

Comics are not just for superheroes — they can be funny, political, deeply personal, or all three at once. Three-time New Zealand Media Awards Best Cartoonist Toby Morris knows this better than most, and at this workshop he unpacks why non-fiction comics work so well before putting pencil to paper alongside participants.

Teens aged 13–18 will hear Morris discuss different forms of documentary comics, then work through writing and illustrating a one-page comic of their own. Morris is an Auckland-based artist, writer and illustrator whose picture books and documentary series — including The Side Eye on The Spinoff and titles such as Te Tiriti O Waitangi and Dad Man Walking — span audiences from children to adults. Drawing materials and snacks are provided.

Held at Rānui Library, the workshop is part of the We Read Auckland / Ka Pānui Tātou i Tāmaki Makaurau programme presented by Auckland Council Libraries.
