What it is
Whangaparāoa Library runs a Read to a Dog programme designed to build literacy, self-confidence, and self-esteem in children. Reading aloud to a dog is far less daunting than reading to a person — the dog listens attentively, never judges, and lets the child set the pace entirely.
Each session is a 15-minute one-on-one slot with a trained therapy dog and their handler, who stays present throughout. All dogs have been assessed for health, safety, and temperament, and many have experience working alongside young children. Close contact with a dog helps children relax and focus, making it a natural fit for reluctant readers.
The programme welcomes tamariki aged five and up who want to practise their reading skills, as well as older rangatahi and teens who could do with some calm, low-pressure time to de-stress. Free tickets are required as spaces are limited.
