What it is

Tamariki become apprentice wayfinders at the New Zealand Maritime Museum these school holidays! They'll build their very own cardboard waka before setting off on a voyage through the museum to discover the nine stars of Matariki — uncovering star knowledge along the way and learning how Pacific navigators used the skies to cross vast oceans.

Using the Te Toki star compass, young explorers will seek out stars like Ururangi, the star of the winds, and gather knowledge about food, weather, family, and the sea. A beautifully immersive way to celebrate Matariki and connect with Aotearoa's rich navigational heritage.
