What it is

Sheepworld is a working farm park where families can explore at their own pace, hand-feeding sheep, alpacas, goats and chickens along the way. The headline act is the live shearing demonstration — kids watch closely as a shearer works through a fleece and learns where New Zealand wool comes from. Among the resident animals are Swiss Valais Blacknose sheep, a breed that tends to stop children in their tracks.

The farm has been welcoming visitors for over 38 years and draws more than 27,000 guests annually, with a strong Google rating to match. A café on site serves organic coffee alongside house-made breakfasts and lunches made from local and farm-fresh ingredients, so there is no need to pack a picnic.

Sheepworld is owned by a charitable trust, Springboard, which supports local young people — so every visit contributes directly to community programmes. A campground on the property makes it an option for families wanting to stretch the day into an overnight stay.

We had a really great time at Sheepworld. It’s a fantastic place for all ages and a wonderful experience at any time of the year, especially during summer. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, with plenty to see and do. The animals are well cared for, and the farm experience is both fun and educational. Walking around the grounds was enjoyable, and there’s lots of space to explore at your own pace. Overall, it’s a great spot to visit, whether you’re with family, friends, or just looking for something different to do. Highly recommended.

I’ve visited Matakana Market many times, but I only just discovered that this place was nearby. I’m so happy to have found it, even if it’s a bit late! Unlike other places, the animals here seemed quite unique, which made it even more exciting for the kids. There’s also a well-designed playground where children can have lots of fun. The parking area is spacious and convenient as well. We’re planning to visit again soon. Although it’s a bit far from Auckland, it’s definitely somewhere we’d love to go often. I hope more people get to know about this wonderful place.

What a fantastic and fun family friendly experience. We came up from Auckland and got there for opening at 10am. Came on the weekend but it wasn’t super busy at open which was great as we got feed and pat a lot of the animals whilst it was still quiet. Our kids got to feed the baby calves as well as the baby lambs (lambs during the show). The show itself was great, really fun and interactive and my two young boys really enjoyed. It was great to see the dogs round up the sheep in action as well as a live demo of a sheep shearing. We ended up staying for around 3 hours and loved every minute. Very well done! Animals are super friendly, well looked after and seem content and happy! Will come back and would recommend.

Great place! Stopped on our way down from a campsite a few hours north, and is a really nice way to break up a drive. It's a working farm, and you get to see them round up the sheep with their sheep dog, before watching them shear a sheep. You can also feed some lambs if you're lucky! Outside of that, they have a lot of other animals dotted around, of which most you can feed with a bag you can buy from the entrance.
