eRide Waiheke

Waiheke is a hilly island, and that is the thing that stops most families cycling it. Electric bikes answer the problem plainly: the motor does the climbing, and the riding becomes a matter of choosing which bay to stop at. eRide hires from the ferry terminal, so there is no transfer to arrange and no car to bring across the water. The family walks off the boat, is fitted with helmets and given a route, and rides away.

What it is

The bikes are set up for visitors rather than enthusiasts, with panniers for togs and towels and a holder for the phone doing the navigating. Staff will talk through a route to suit how far the children can realistically go, which is worth taking them up on. The loop north from Matiatia is the usual choice, taking in Oneroa, Little Oneroa and Palm Beach with swimming stops along the way.

We enjoyed biking around Waiheke in winter. Nice and chill, but lovely and warm in the sun and lots of places to stop. Conrad had great bikes for us. The brakes were labelled (helpful for Us clients) bikes came with panniers and a lock and fully charged. Helmets were comfortable and the hard copy map and app were helpful. Highly recommend. Easy to grab them straight off the ferry. Booking them online and doing the waiver will make the process a bit speedier. We just turned up. We enjoyed a few side quests. Especially Trig Hill and Sandy Bay. The ebikes made it perfect for the hills. We had lunch at The Batch and used first table for a discount of 50% on food.

Had THE best excursion of my 2-month trip! I was a bit hesitant to book since I’d be riding alone and had never been to Waiheke before, but Claire talked me through everything with so much patience, precision and reassurance. She got me off to a fantastic start and so I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. Bike was easy to handle and roads and other drivers were a breeze to deal with. And the scenery—wow! Great company with great bikes and the best employees! Thank you Claire, for an unforgettable day!

We rented e-bikes from eRide Waiheke. It was a great idea, because Waiheke Island is really nice to discover by bike instead of by car. The staff at the location was very helpful with advice where to go, about the road conditions and about how New Zealand drivers on Waiheke Island responds to cyclists (and vice versa). We made a roundtrip from Matiatia Ferry Terminal via Oneroa, Palm Beach, Onetangi, Omiha, Ostend, Blackpool, Church Bay and back to Matiatia. The roads are OK, but you always need to watch your back because sometimes the bicycle paths just ends suddenly and you have to merge into the normal road where the cars and lorries are driving pretty fast. Not all roads are suitable to bike on, because it’s too steep or the road condition is too bad. The bikes are well-maintained and in a good shape. eRide Waiheke provides helmets and bags to click on your bike. They also have child seats for rent. Half-way, I had a flat tyre in the front. After I called the shop for assistance, the staff directly came to help me with a replacing e-bike within around 15 minutes. Wonderful service and kudos to the staff!

Had a great time doing the 5 bays ride on the first afternoon in Waiheke then the Man o War 52kms ride on the second day. Staff were super helpful, great maps & information/ suggestions what to see / where to stop as we visited in the quiet season. Couldn’t ask for a better few days! Thanks team @e-ride Waiheke.
