Ōtara Saturday Market
Location
Newbury Street, Manukau, Auckland 2023, New Zealand
About
Held every Saturday morning in the car park behind Ōtara Town Centre, this market is one of Auckland's great weekly rituals. Stallholders are set up and selling from 6am, so early risers get the pick of fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade jams, seedlings, and plants before the crowds thicken.
Kids tend to make a beeline for the food — island doughnuts, fried bread, bacon and egg rolls, churros, and pork buns among them — while grown-ups browse new and second-hand clothing, urban streetwear, church and designer pieces, shoes, jewellery, and bric-a-brac. The cultural heart of the market lies in its Māori, Samoan, Tongan, and Niuean arts: tapa cloth, pounamu, bone carvings, kete, korowai, and custom-made headpieces sit alongside Polynesian music.
It suits families who enjoy a genuine community atmosphere rather than a curated weekend event — the sort of place where the browsing, the eating, and the people-watching all carry equal weight.
