Rotoroa Island Wildlife Sanctuary

A 75-minute ferry ride from the Viaduct drops families into a genuinely different world. Rotoroa Island has been predator-free since 2014, and the wildlife knows it — weka, takahē, pāteke and tīeke move through restored native bush with the confidence of creatures that belong there. Kids can clamber through coastal and forest trails, linger on sandy beaches, swim and snorkel in the gulf, or try their hand at fishing.

What it is

The island layers history and ecology on top of the wildlife: a museum, historic buildings, a cemetery, and art installations and sculptures scattered across the landscape give older children and adults plenty to chew on. Rangers run 60-minute guided walks that weave together birdspotting, ecological restoration and island history in one circuit.

Day trips suit families after a proper outing, while the full range of activities — beaches, bush, heritage, hands-on conservation — means the island keeps earning its ferry fare across different ages and visits.

We have visited Rotoroa Island before and absolutely love it, it's a special place and our group of 18 was excited to return for another long weekend together. Unfortunately, our booking was cancelled just two weeks before our arrival date due to an ongoing water supply issue on the island. While I understand that infrastructure problems happen, a cancellation of this magnitude, affecting 4 families who had been planning and preparing for months deserves more than a short notice window. From what I've heard, this water issue has been ongoing for some time, which raises questions about why communication to affected guests wasn't more proactive. All long weekends for the next 12 months are already booked, so rebooking our group simply isn't an option. We've lost what would have been a really special trip with no real path to reschedule. At the time of writing this, my refund still hasn't been processed. I also just received an automated email thanking me for my stay, which didn't happen. That prompted this review. Rotoroa is a beautiful place and I don't doubt the Trust is working to fix things. But clearer communication, more notice where possible, and timely refunds would go a long way toward retaining the goodwill of guests like us.

Such an idyllic place to spend a weekend. Just a short boat ride from Auckland but it feels like you are thousands of miles away. A great place to relax and experience the beauty of New Zealand.

Absolutely stunning and in the 'hidden gem' category of things to do in Auckland City. I'm definitely coming back and want to do so with friends and family. The trip is worth the cost of the ferry, although I totally recommend staying at least over night, rather than just trying to take a day trip. Bring your own food and bedding. Everything else you need is there. The birdlife is delightful, and so are the views.

What a cool place to spend a weekend. We stayed in Mahoe which was so well set up. Very clean and comfortable with everything you need. Staying for the weekend makes you feel like you have the island all to yourself. The beaches are beautiful. Takahe wandering around and tieke in abundance. Doing a great job with conservation. Recommend Auckland Sea Shuttles for a group. Steve is safe and reliable. Thanks for a lovely weekend.

We had an amazing time at Rotoroa Island for a week over the new year period with two other families. It was like a postcard and often felt like we had our own private island. Ladies bay is stunning and protected perfectly from the SW wind. The house was so well equipped with everything we needed. Marie, Shaun (and their kids), Susie and Daniella were all wonderful hosts. We'll be back!
